Mental health in the classroom: Resources for teachers

The ABCs of Mental Health provides two free, web-based resources - one for teachers and one for parents. Theyinclude ideas for promoting the mental health of children and adolescents, information about how children change as they get older, descriptions of behaviours that might indicate a problem, and practical suggestions for steps to take.

HeretoHelp's primary audience is individuals with mental health and substance use problems and their families, but the site also includes resources for supporting students. It provides information about mental health and substance use issues, and programs and services in British Columbia. Resources particularly relevant to teachers include:

This page contains resources about the most common mental health problems in classrooms, including anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD and behavioural disorders. It includes tips for early identification and intervention, practical suggestions for accommodating and responding to students with mental health problems and ways to combat stigma in the classroom.

The Centre for School provides resources for members of the school community, including teachers, caregivers, clinicians and students. The initiative is supported by the Baltimore City Health Department and is administered by the University of Maryland.

Teach Resiliency is a door to an online library of practical, evidence-informed resources and tools to support mental health in our classrooms and schools—for students as well as educators. It’s also a place to learn from one another: to exchange ideas, create new resources, and share important perspectives and ideas.

Compassionate Classrooms is a reference for teachers about the mental health needs of students. The most important factor for success in dealing with a mental health issue is support – and teachers are an important part of their students' support system. This booklet discusses common mental health issues and offers tools to help identify students in need and resources to help teachers make referrals to mental health professionals

Drug Promotion, Drug Problems is a curriculum resource site for teachers, educators and professionals interested in youth mental health, media studies and addiction.  Each lesson plan is designed to support grade 9-11 Canadian curriculum.

  • Resource guides for teachers: British Columbia Ministry of Education

These resources help educators identify early warning signs of mental health issues and develop strategies for supporting students with mental health problems.

This guide teaches educators about mental health so they can promote the mental health of all students. It helps educators recognize students who may be experiencing distress and support them in their pathway to care. The guide discusses the mental health problems that students may experience and their potential impact on learning. It also offers strategies for enhancing students' ability to function at school both academically and sociall and suggests how to talk about mental health with parents and students.

This guide provides:

  • practical ideas for teaching about mental illness in secondary school
  • curriculum guidelines for various courses showing how the program fits curriculum requirements
  • ready-to-use overheads and activities that address various mental health topics, such as causes, treatment and stigma
  • evaluation tools to help teachers measure the program's impact on students' knowledge and attitudes
  • resources and supports for teachers.

This handbook is divided into seven sections: anxiety disorders, autism, depression, eating disorders, impulse control disorders, schizophrenia and Tourette's syndrome. Each section includes:

  • a description of classroom behaviours that can accompany common youth mental health problems
  • strategies to help teachers work with students in the classroom
  • summaries of medical or therapeutic treatments
  • a list of resources.

Teachers should be more equipped at handling such situations as a lot depends on them for a child's health. I am sure if the read review they will know what to do in case of something happens.

The term “mental health” itself is ambiguous. This term combines two sciences and two areas of practice - medical and psychological. Health is a state of complete physical, spiritual, social well-being, and not just the absence of disease and physical defects. The mental health of the student and the teacher can be recognized by the positive emotional state of the child and the emotional reactions to various influences. I once wrote an essay on a similar topic. more
