Miscarriage of justice: mentally ill man dies in custody

CBC reports the story of Donald Kushniruk, a man who pulled a knife in an Edmonton dog park and was sentenced to seven days in jail. Due to delays in a justice system unable to manage his mental illness, he ended up spending more than two and half years in jail. He eventually committed suicide while in custody. Alberta Chief Justice Terry Machett has promised to study the delays and to set up a pilot project to speed up some cases.
