Problem gambling

Primary care providers are in a unique position to help patients affected by problem gambling. They can identify early signs of gambling problems, motivate patients to seek help and provide resources and referrals.

As a primary care professional, you probably have already provided services to people who have gambling-related problems. In fact, people affected by gambling problems may often seek help from primary care providers for health issues related to gambling before seeking help for the gambling problem itself. Problem gambling has been referred to as the "hidden addiction," not only because shame, embarrassment or stigma keep people from disclosing it, but also because gambling problems may not be as obvious as substance use problems
