Co-occuring disorders

Problem gambling is associated with high levels of comorbidity with various mental health and substance use disorders, including:

  • mood disorders (38%)
  • nicotine use (60%)
  • anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (37%)
  • substance use disorders (57%)
  • major depression (23%).

Research has also found an increased prevalence of problem gambling among people who take dopamine agonists such as Mirapex (pramipexole), which are commonly used for Parkinson's disease.
