The art of the brief psychiatric interview
Primary care providers play an important role in delivering mental health care. Patients will often disclose things to their family doctor that they may not tell other physicians.
By including emotional or psychiatric issues as a standard part of patient interviews, primary care providers make an invaluable service available to their patients. They can decide how far they want to follow these problems on their own with patients, and when to refer them to specialists. The decision can depend on the clinician's knowledge and confidence in addressing these issues.
