Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
It is common for women to experience a wide range of emotions during the perinatal period, including pregnancy and the following year. For some women, pregnancy and early parenthood can trigger more serious mental health problems. Primary care providers have a long-term relationship with their patients that allows them to routinely assess emotional health during the perinatal period and to provide psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy, or to refer patients to specialized mental health services.
