Assessment and management of suicide risk
More than 3,600 people die by suicide in Canada each year. Of people who complete suicide, 45 per cent have been seen by a primary care provider within the previous month. This figure is even higher in the elderly age group. Although it is not possible to predict who will attempt or complete suicide, primary care providers can identify patients at higher risk of suicide and take steps to reduce that risk.
